Sun Protection Beyond Beach Season

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, although invisible and imperceptible to our senses, poses a significant threat to our skin health. This form of electromagnetic radiation, emitted by the sun, can lead to irreversible damage and is responsible for an alarming 95% of skin cancer cases in Australia. Despite its intangible nature, it is crucial to comprehend the potential harm UV radiation can inflict upon our skin and take necessary precautions to protect ourselves from its deleterious effects.

 

The primary reason why UV radiation is so tricky to comprehend lies in its invisibility. Unlike visible light or heat, UV rays cannot be seen or felt by the human eye or skin. This characteristic renders it an insidious threat as individuals may be oblivious to their exposure until it is too late. Moreover, the damaging effects of UV radiation are cumulative, meaning that even brief or sporadic exposure over time can lead to long-term consequences. It is not solely prolonged sun exposure that puts individuals at risk; even on overcast days or during winter months, UV radiation can still penetrate the clouds and affect our skin. It is therefore crucial to foster an understanding of UV radiation and its potential hazards to effectively safeguard our skin health all year-round.

It is important to consistently implement sun protection measures whenever the UV index reaches 3 or higher, irrespective of the season or temperature. In New South Wales, the detrimental effects of high UV levels on the skin persist for a substantial period of over 10 months throughout the year. It then prudent to incorporate sun protection into your daily regimen without exception.

 

To combat this invisible threat, the Cancer Council recommends a five-step approach: slip, slop, slap, seek, and slide.

1. SLIP on sun smart clothing. This provides an additional physical barrier between our skin and the sun's harmful rays. Wearing long sleeves and pants.

2. SLOP on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Applying sunscreen generously and frequently, especially to exposed areas such as the face, neck, and hands, can help block the harmful UV rays.

3. SLAP on a sun smart hat. Wearing a hat with a wide brim or a legionnaire style hat can provide shade to the face, neck, and ears, minimizing the risk of sunburn and other skin damage.

4. SEEK shade. Whether it's under a tree, an umbrella, or a shade structure, finding shade can significantly reduce our overall UV exposure.

5. SLIDE on sunglasses.  Opting for sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection is crucial to ensure maximum eye and skin health.

 

By following these guidelines, we can effectively protect ourselves from the damaging effects of UV radiation.
